Summary

The serious and sometimes life-long nature of the injuries that some student-athletes suffer as they play for their college and universities has been the subject of growing concern in the past two decades. Simultaneously, the revenue produced by college athletics has also increased. This review details the history, recent developments, and case law related to Workers’ Compensation issues in collegiate sports. It also provides the authors’ recommendations as to how student-athletes can be regarded as employees to extend Workers’ Compensation insurance benefits as a key protection and compensate them for their work beyond educational-related benefits.
